  2. Attach power cord: Plug into machine and wall outlet (120V).
  3. Install foot pedal: Connect to machine port and place on floor.

  5. Attach presser foot: Lower presser bar and snap foot into place.

WARNING! Machine is heavy; use both hands when lifting. Ensure stable surface before operation.

Threading Instructions

Proper threading is essential for smooth operation and quality stitches.

  1. Raise presser foot and needle to highest position.
  2. Place spool on spindle with thread unwinding counterclockwise.
  3. Follow numbered threading path: Through first thread guide, around tension discs, through take-up lever, down to needle.
  4. Thread needle from front to back.
  5. For bobbin: Wind bobbin evenly, insert into case with thread following "J" shape.
  6. Pull up bobbin thread by holding needle thread and turning handwheel.

Controls and Settings

Main controls located on right side of machine body.

Stitch Length Dial: Turn clockwise for longer stitches, counterclockwise for shorter stitches. Position 0 for darning.

Reverse Stitch Lever: Press and hold to sew in reverse for seam reinforcement.

Tension Dial: Higher numbers for tighter tension (4-6 for most fabrics).

Presser Foot Pressure: Adjust screw above presser foot - tighter for thick fabrics, looser for delicate fabrics.

Light Switch: Located near handwheel for built-in light control.

Stitch Selection

The Singer 221 performs straight stitch only with adjustable length.

  1. Set stitch length: 2-2.5mm for general sewing, 3-4mm for basting.
  2. Adjust tension: Start with setting 4 and test on fabric scrap.
  3. Select appropriate presser foot: Standard foot for most sewing.
  4. Practice reverse stitching: Hold lever down for 2-3 stitches at seam ends.

Tip: Always test stitch settings on fabric scrap before starting project.

Bobbin Winding

Proper bobbin winding ensures even thread distribution.

  1. Place spool on spindle and thread through bobbin winding tension disk.
  2. Insert empty bobbin on winder spindle, push to right.
  3. Hold thread end, press foot pedal to wind bobbin evenly.
  4. Stop when bobbin is 3/4 full; cut thread and push winder back.
  5. Insert bobbin in case with thread moving counterclockwise.

WARNING! Do not overfill bobbin as this can cause thread jams.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity.

Daily: Brush out lint from bobbin area and feed dogs.

Weekly: Oil moving parts with Singer sewing machine oil (2-3 drops).

Monthly: Clean tension discs with folded fabric or dental floss.

Storage: Cover machine when not in use, store in dry location.

CAUTION! Unplug machine before cleaning or maintenance. Use only Singer recommended oils.
